The Oehrlein School of Cosmetology is approved by the United States Department of Education to offer the following federal financial assistance programs. Eligible students are awarded an outright grant or loan for post-secondary education.
- Federal PELL Grant
- William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Stafford and PLUS)

Determining Financial Aid Basics The basis of determining a student's financial need will be an analysis of the financial status of the student's and/or parents' income. This analysis is accomplished by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) distributed by the U.S. Department of Education.
The FAFSA is available online at www.studentaid.gov
Financial need is based on:
- Cost of attendance
- Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
- Financial Need

What is a Federal PELL Grant?
A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund). Generally, Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which other aid may be added.
What is a Student Loan?
Student loans, unlike grants, are borrowed money that must be repaid, with interest, just like car loans and mortgages. We participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Student Loan Program referred to as Direct Stafford Loans (or Direct Loans).
For the student, there are two types of direct loans available through the U.S. Department of Education
- Subsidized: While financial need is not a requirement to obtain a Direct Loan, if you demonstrate financial need the U.S. Department of Education will pay the interest that accrues on this loan during certain periods.
- Unsubsidized: This type of loan is not awarded on basis of need. You will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full.
For the parent, there is a loan available to assist their student with the tuition and fees.
- Parents may borrow under the PLUS Loan program to help pay the educational expenses of a dependent undergraduate student who is enrolled in an eligible program at our school.
- Your parents do not need to find a lender. We assist in administering the Direct loan Program by distributing the loan application, processing the loan and disbursing the loan funds.

A student enrolled in the Cosmetology program qualifies for loans unless they are in default on a previous student loan. The application process is easy, ask us how much is available to you for your training.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen with a valid Social Security number (SSN)
- Be working toward a certificate in an eligible program
- Show by one of the following means, that you're qualified to obtain a post-secondary education
· Have a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate
· Complete a high school education in a home school setting approved under state law. - Register (if you haven't already) with the selective service, if you're a male between the ages of 18 and 25.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress once in school.
- Demonstrate financial need (PELL Grant Only)

5/11/2020 - CARES Act
In accordance with the CARES Act, the Oehrlein School of Cosmetology signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement that the school has used 100% of grant funds received to date to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
A total of $27,044.00 in grant funds has been received and $27,044.00 has been disbursed.
23 students were eligible to receive grant funds and 23 students received grant funds. All eligible students received $1175.83, an equal portion, of the Emergency Financial Aid Grant.
Students were instructed to use the grant funds for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care).
